Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy

Also known as “Bowen Technique”

Bowen therapy or Bowen Technique (named after the Australian Tom Bowen) is a very effective treatment which helps reduce painful spasms, inflammation, stiffness, tension, cramps, paraesthesia, numbness and other uncomfortable symptoms. It involves performing a series of gentle moves over the fascia of muscles, tendons and ligaments. Fascia is a fascinating connective tissue formed by bundles or sheets of collagen fibres oriented in a wavy pattern. It occurs as superficial, deep and visceral layers wrapping muscle, tendon and ligament fibres individually and as a whole. It provides a supportive, movable and lubricated wrapping to allow a smooth gliding, frictionless interaction between tissues, and is strong and flexible so is able to resist the unidirectional pull of muscles by its ability to straighten out its waves so as to accommodate any shearing force. Injury or excessive physical stress causes the fascia fibres to form tight bonds reducing flexibility and thereby creating a straitjacket effect. Stimulation to specific stress loading points on the fascia triggers a release of stored energy and thereby relaxes these tight bonds. Relaxation of the fascia will in turn bring about relaxation of the muscles and tissues beneath it. Also the fact that fascia wraps blood vessels and nerves as they travel through these tissues will bring about an improvement in blood flow and allow better drainage and elimination of inflammatory and corrosive metabolites which may have built up following injury. This improvement in blood circulation to the injured area is very important for the transport of oxygen and nutrition into the inflammed cells. These positive responses brought about by the therapy often results in a sudden and dramatic reduction in pain and other unpleasant symptoms. The treatment takes approximately 1 hour. One to three treatments often bring about remarkable relief. However it is advised to have a Bowen treatment regularly to maintain the normal flexible, resilient, lubricant, smooth, gliding properties of healthy muscle fascia.

Some of the problems which Bowen therapy can address are: Sciatica, Back pain, Trapped nerves, Shoulder/Neck/ Arm/Hip/ Knee/Ankle pain, Sprains, Muscle pain and Fibromyalgia. Because of the relationship of visceral fascia to the organs and membranes of the body Bowen therapy is also helpful in the treatment of: Hay-fever, Allergies, Sinusitis, Headaches, Infantile colic, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Indigestion, Asthma, Breathing problems, Kidney problems and Incontinence.
